Le monde de l'opéra pleure une artiste au charisme exceptionnel. Beverly Sills, c'est l'humanité faite chanteuse. Voix unique, avec la profonde tristesse qui accompagne sa disparition reste le bonheur de ses impérissables enregistrements.

Toward the end of the PBS program this evening, I began to feel dread and fear that what I was watching may have been a memorial. I began to cry when I found it true.
Beverly Sills was graced with so many gifts, and she shared them enthusiastically with all. Her willingness to accept life's challenges with dignity is inspiring; she also helped others gain a deeper appreciation of opera. She used her instrument with incredible precision and with exquisite, amazing sound.
The only solace is that we can continue to experience her sound forever. Lovely, beautiful woman with an inspiring capacity for living!

i remember in the early 70s working as a makeup artist for the opera company of philadelphia for your performance of The Daughter of the Regiment. During the last rush to prepare the chorus for opening curtain, you came into the room on the wind - exhuberant energy - wishing everyone a beautiful performance.
With your presence, the room lit to a bright ebulent joy that made the performance truly magical.
I will never forget that day and i will never forget the wonderful performances you gave to us all at city center and many more places.
You truly made opera the music of the people - even with your too soon retirement, you continued to give that gift of music to us all.
Thank you forever, bubbles - you are now an even brighter shining star! you will forever live in your music!

I just finished watching American Performance on PBS this evening and was shocked to the the "In Memorium" at the end of the program. I've been ill and am sorry to have missed the announcement.
What a woman! I've always looked to her as a role model. She was so talented an artist and we all are truly lucky that her recordings remain. She seemed to give 100% to anything she did and dealt with the grief in her life by becoming stronger.
I am truly saddened by her passing and send my sincerest sympathy to her family.

When I resaw her farewell performance video, I actually thought those word now have a new and deeper meaning to all of us. In fact, not only the words, but especially Sills' touching, almost haunting facial expressions and gestures, always so gentle, charming and delightful. It's fantastic that she didn't shed any tear, but she could move all her fans by just being her, so naturally expressive and enchanting. I feel sorry for us who won't have such a legend in our world anymore and hope her death was peaceful.
I think we don't need to be sad, because Sills had a life of so many artistic and personal virtues and challenges that I can only realize she is in Heaven telling jokes to the likes of Nilsson and Tebaldi, including, of course, her unforgettable smile!

I was stunned to hear that Beverly Sills has died. I am also shocked that she was 78! Someone that full of life with so much joi de vive could not possibly be 78!
I am deeply saddened by her passing. Beverly Sills was not only a magificent opera star, the Belle of the ball, but she was a star as a human being. Beverly Sills had nothing to prove and therefore no axe to grind. No big ego. She simply allowed her light to shine, and she did it with grace and character. Because she knew who she was, she was able to relax and be herself. She had no need to put on airs. I adore you Beverly! I only wish I had gotten to see you sing. But I am going to go out and buy some of your records So you will live on for me. God bless you.
May the angels in heaven enjoy your singing, knowing you are one of them.
Thank you for letting your light shine. You have brought so much joy to so many. I will always remember you laughing. That's how I know you are an angel - they take themselves lightly!

Ms. Sills apparently knew she was on the way out from the cancer that eventually made its way to her lungs for a long time, and set to work seeing all was in place before leaving. What a brave, purposeful lady she was, and I hope the family, especially Muffy, Peter Jr., and her brother Stanley, know that they are in our thoughts. I read "Bubbles", the autobiography, many years ago and have admired her ever since. She's been the face of the Lincoln Center ever since I can remember, and the broadcast from now on just won't be the same. I only wish there were something I could say that would be of comfort to her family. I have her on DVD, and her voice will sing out for eternity.

In 1964 at the age of 13, my mother bought me several opera records on the advice of a music teacher. That was my first introduction to Beverly Sills. I have admired her as a person and artist ever since. My best wishes go out to her family at this time of loss.

Even though I'm too young to have seen her live and I've never come close to meeting her in my life, Beverly Sills has made a huge impact on me. She has been for a long time, and will always remain to be, my favorite soprano ever. Her sheer beauty as a singer and a person made her one of the best loved opera singers of all time. She deserved ever second of applause she ever got and deserved every adoring fan. I hope all these tributes to Ms. Sills let her family know that she was loved by anyone and everyone. What a fantastic woman. May she rest in peace in the opera house in the sky. We love you, Bubbles, and we always will!!

I was an unabashed Sills fan for the last twelve years of her career. At the time, I was a poor student in Boston, having just heard her first album of Bellini & Donizetti arias. She was scheduled to sing La fille du regiment in Boston, as part of a subscription series that I could not afford to buy. I wrote to her c/o the NYCO and within days I had a return post card with the name of someone at the Boston Opera who could arrange for a single ticket for me, which he did. I was hooked!
I was among the throngs of people who would visit her back stage after performances; she always remembered me, and took time to chat. I remember one incident when she sang Norma in Boston. I had spent the day at the beach, and suffered a severe sunburn. I wouldn't miss the performance but couldn't wear anything but a T-shirt.
Fortunately I had one which said BEVERLY SILLS IS A GOOD HIGH. When I visited backstage after the performance, she autographed the T-shirt. It was evident to Ms. Sills that I had a terrible burn; she lifted my T-shirt and gently ran her nails down my bright red stomach. "I couldn't resist", she said. I have never washed that T-shirt and will never part with it.
May Beverly Sills, who gave so much to the world, receive her reward in the hereafter for all eternity

Beverly Sills was a part of my entire musical life. Rich and superb in alll ways. But the one that most completely summed her up was the October 31 dress rehearsaol at the San Francisco Opera -- I Puritani, and she really did not want to do it, but it was a farewel of sorts to Kurt Herbert Adler. The production was difficult from the beginning and dress rehearsal was tense, so nerves were on edge as we approahced her big aria, and here she came, sleepwalking and carrying before her a splendid jack o'lantern. Never missed a beat, simply sang the opening of the area deadpan, and watched as the atmosphere lightened, the crew fell out in laughter, Adler hooted and the orchestra disintigrated. Thank you, Beverly SIlls, for keeping it all inpersective for us.

Beverly Sills as Baby Doe. That is the title of the video on YouTube. The Willow song from Ballad of Baby Doe will just flatten you. Do you know how hard it is to land on the very top of a high D natural? She is just THERE. What a splendid singer. What a splendid woman. Please support the arts in your schools in your own communities. Take your children to see opera. Take yourself.

I have an autographed picture of Miss Sills in a place of honor in my home. She is an insparation for my own singing. She is also an inspiration to all women everywhere, because she did it all. She was a wife, a mother to two very special children, and a diva! My favorite quote of hers is "You may be disappointed if you fail, but you are doomed if you don't give it a try". She will be missed.

It is wrenching but joyful to read all these extrordinary tributes to one of the world''s favorite people. She managed to transform my dubious husband into an opera fanatic - but who could resist Manon? I am also in complete awe of her career as an Arts Administrator. Too bad my late opera buff cum accountant had to miss a comment on a recent Met Opera intermission - something like "she could read a balance sheet like nobody else"!

I discovered Beverly Sills and Opera when I was 11 ( I'm 47 now ). More then the musicianship, I loved how she brought the emotion of each character alive. In 1977, I had the opportunity to sit in on the rehersal she was doing in preparation for a concert with the Springfield, MA Symphony. I was bowled over by the high notes... By everything... Now Callas and Sills are gone.. How I hope they come back in the next life to reveal to us all that remains hidden in music....

These are the gifts the gods send us...these divine emissaries, these wingless angels sent as messengers to the truth that there is absolute beauty, and that even we can aspire to it. Beverly's flight was all too brief but its arc defined opera and truth for two generations of grateful admirers. All geniuses are thus just on loan to us. Thank God for Beverly Sills.

When I heard on the radio, tuesday morning, on our "France Musique", that Beverly Sills leaved us, I felt very sad... For me it was a legend going away... I never had the chance to hear her singing on stage, but I saw videos and have records of this wonderful artist... Her intelligence in singing and acting, her delicious sense of humour (Sillsiana) are very precious to me...
It's really a great lost... Mrs Sills, we'll never forget you !
