Beverly Sills - From First note to last

I think having a singing voice is a unique talent. It's kind of like a diamond. You can't manufacture a diamond - if you do it's a fake. But, it does have to be polished and put in its proper setting in order to be appreciated. - Sills interviewed in "Reverberations" by Robert Jacobson

Intolleranza

Location : WGBH studios in Boston (Boston Opera Group)
Artists : Lawrence White, Margaret Roggero, Ercole Bertolino, Guus Hoekman
Conductor - Bruno Maderna

Note -
This recording is the audio of the NET television production, videotaped at the two public performances on February 21 in the Back Bay Theater (matinee and evening). Because of some lighting problems, the singers were asked to go to the NET studios sometime shortly after the 21st, to videotape some close-ups. They did not sing or make any musical additions to the audio already recorded, but simply supplied needed visual elements. The recording is taken from the audio of the telecast and is a combination of parts of the two performances. There has been some confusion about whether the whole opera was performed in studio (it was not) and whether the recording is from the audience (it is not). Further confusion comes from the fact that the first telecast of that videotaped performance was on March 11, 1966. Also, most copies of the audio recording and its entry in catalogs have incorrectly listed Martha Lipton in the cast, who did not participate in the production. (verification for these facts come from WGBH archivists, with additional research by Maurizio Romito, compiler of performance chronologies for conductor Bruno Maderna.)
