Excerpts from operas by Rossini, Verdi, Donizetti, among others, with Alfredo Kraus, Nicolai Gedda, Sherrill Milnes and various orchestras and conductors. With her retirement in January as chairwoman of the Metropolitan Opera, the soprano closed one of the most remarkable public careers in American culture, one that included the leadership of such landmark New York institutions as Lincoln Center and New York City Opera, the feisty company that was willing to give life to her young career when the Met routinely ignored it. She left the stage 25 years ago, at 51, to take over City Opera, and so old recordings, the current release being dubbed "The Very Best," for instance, are reminders of her brilliance as a singer with an extraordinary technique and bright, agreeable sound. - R.M. Note -
The DG booklet and back cover incorrectly list the second part of #3 track on CD 1 as "Obéssons quand leur voix" which is the traditional "Gavotte" of the Cours-la-Reine scene. What is actually on the CD is the alternate Fabliau "Oui dans les bois" which Sills recorded as an appendix to the complete recording. DG has corrected the error on its website. Reviews - Beverly Sills was the people's diva. Her soubriquet was not La Divina (Callas) or La Stupenda (Sutherland), but simply Bubbles (a family nickname). Apart from her remarkable coloratura, her greatest gift was her ability to sing with character, heart-on-the sleeve emotion and, in certain cases, with heart-breaking pathos. Most of the material found on this budget two-CD set has been previously released by EMI. But here, in DG's splendid new 24-bit remastering, the sound has much more clarity and presence on the voice. This is a fond reminder of what a great performer Sills was during her peak years. - Neil Crory, Opera Canada |

...In her prime, Sills possessed a voice noted not only for its technical brilliance, but also for its incredible emotional impact. A powerful tragedienne and an equally irrepressible comedienne, Sills could float a silvery pianissimo of such beauty and pathos that might make one weep. Read More - Neil Crory, Opera Canada |
