Sheldon Harnick’s new English version-savvy but not too slangy-is one of several
reasons for listening to this disc. Beverly Sills as “Anna” and Julius Rudel, who
understand not only each other but the essentials of the Viennese operetta style,
are further inducement, and so is the guileless Danilo of fresh-voiced Alan Titus,
aided by the luxuriantly lyric Valencienne and Camille of Glenys Fowles and
Henry Price. The recording, however, is lackluster in sound. |
